Bentley Unveils World’s Most Luxurious Charity Bus

A former London Routemaster bus, which has been luxuriously restored by Bentley Motors, has today been handed over to the hospice St Luke’s.
St Luke’s, who are based in Winsford, Cheshire, secured the double-decker bus earlier this year and appealed to the luxury car manufacturer Bentley for help in its restoration. Bentley Motors has supported the hospice for the past three years, most recently in April when it helped renovate one of the hospice’s charity shops and rejuvenated the hospice garden during a production shutdown at its Crewe factory.
This latest project has taken 2000 hours to complete with 59 Bentley workers involved The team has sought to retain many of the original features of the bus but adapt it to the needs of St Luke’s in a typical Bentley way.
This has meant using the leather for which Bentley cars are synonymous throughout, all hand stitched with the St Luke’s and Bentley logos. Other skilled craftsmen from Bentley’s woodshop, toolroom and maintenance departments developed bespoke work surfaces, rails, kitchen unit and shelves to help St Luke’s staff in their public awareness and fundraising activities.
The craftsmen are particularly proud of the “used ticket” bin, a feature at the exit of all Routemaster buses which has now been converted into a donation tin.
The Bentley production manager in charge of the project, Gary Lazenby, said: “This has been a real labour of love for all those involved. Bentley staff are incredibly proud of the cars we produce but applying those skills to a bus was a totally new experience for all. We are very grateful to the many local suppliers who provided materials free of charge to help make this iconic vehicle fit for a new lease of life.”
The bus, named Luke, will be used as a travelling shop for colleges and universities as well as an education and awareness base to visit schools and other events.
There will also be an on-board charity shop to help the hospice raise funds while on the road.
St Luke’s corporate fundraiser Karen Burns said: “Bentley’s support has been invaluable to us over the past three years and we are astounded by our new community bus.
“This is a world-first, a community charity bus finished to Bentley standard, with plush leather interiors and Bentley wings on show to promote our relationship with the organisation.
“As a charity, we could only dream about Luke undergoing such a transformation. What we have is not only unique but is also a practical tool for us to share the St Luke’s story.”
Doug Dickson, board member for manufacturing at Bentley Motors said: “Many of our associates have accrued time as the global downturn forced us to reduce production and shutdown for a number of weeks earlier this year
“We offered the team the opportunity to use some of their downtime to help the hospice and were overwhelmed with the response. Rather than stay at home, so many skilled Bentley team members volunteered to help St Luke’s. The result is a vehicle which combines the best of British luxury craftsmanship and manufacturing skill within an historic vehicle which is a symbol of British transport. We hope it helps make a difference here, in our local community.

2009 IAA Frankfurt Auto / Motor Show – in the pink!

Frankfurt Show is well and truly over, but we find ourselves with a lot unpublished material that we are sure, as car fans, you’ll want to see. So read on! Firstly on on the Mansory stand, there’s a pink, totally outrageous, modified Bentley coupe. Just why would you want to do this to a beautiful car, even if you have way too much money?! Answer: you wouldn’t but it sure gets some attention. Maybe we looked at the other stars on their stand as a resultf you thought carbon fibre-everywhere was yesterday’s theme, then look further along their stand where an Aston and a Bugatti lurk in proud assertion of the breed. At least the dark weave of the carbon cloth gives an unexpected understatement to the conversions. Naturally there are deep performance tweaks to supplement the cult clothing. But this is a fashion show…and bespoke clothing doesn’t come cheapMansory’s carbon and chrome Bugatti Veyron, by contrast is pretty tasteful. Veyron’s are not subtle, and plenty of factory cars look more outrageous than this example. We’ll take this one and leave the matt pink Bentley thanks.

Student designed Mazda Yuuga Coupe features no smiley face

The jury is largely in on Mazda's new happy Corporate face and well, most folks don't like it. But what if Mazda designed a car featuring its Nagare design language minus the smiley face? That's exactly what one student designer named Imran Ali did with the Yuuga Coupe. Presented at the 2009 Degree Show at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, UK, we have to say that the Yugga Coupe is quite the looker. No known plans exist for production. For all anyone knows, this could be a Mazda6 coupe. Or, the Yuuga could indicate a design direction for future RX models – like a return to the gone-but-totally-not-forgotten RX-7. Or hey, it could be something totally different – who knows? The all-glass roof and crash-cymbal sized brakes are obviously auto show wishful thinking, yet the side profile is quite modern and Fisker-like. The rear looks even better – sorta like an Aston Martin V8. Then, of course, there's the Mazda meets GT-R front end, which is especially handsome. Good work, Mr. Ali. We hope they build it, though the name has to go. Too close to Yugo for our liking.

Germany Aims For A Million EVs By 2020

Electric vehicles may be a common sight on the autobahns in the next decade. German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, is intent on putting more EVs on the roads and her Cabinet is finishing a plan to do just that.
The program would offer financial incentives beginning in 2012 to aid in the production and sale of EVs. The goal of the proposed legislation is to put one million EVs on German roads by 2020. The German government will consider the plan during their upcoming fall session.
While German automakers have generally been ahead of the curve with diesel technologies, they've offered far fewer hybrid options than their Japanese and American competitors.
With the EV movement gaining traction, manufacturers are racing to electrify their lineups. Among the German car brands, Audi Volkswagen,BMW and Daimler all have long term plans for EVs - and now, their government does too.

World’s Most Expensive Car

What is the most expensive car in the world? The 1931 Bugatti RoyaleKellner Coupe was sold for $8,700,000 in 1987. However, that car andmany alike will not be included in this list because it is notavailable on the market today. It is hard to imagine someone wouldactually spend 8 million dollars on a car instead of using it forsomething more productive. However, if you have the money and theopportunity, you will definitely spend a small fraction of it to placea few of these supercars in your garage. Here is the 10 most expensive car available on the market.
Buggati Veryon $1,192,057
This is by far the most expensive street legal car available on themarket today. It is the fastest accelerating car reaching 0-60 in 2.5seconds. 2009 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Hybrid Offers Unprecedented Combination Of Efficiency, Technology And Luxury In A Large SUV

Cadillac has launched the 2009 Escalade Platinum Hybrid, the most technically advanced large luxury SUV yet, blending the exclusive features of the Platinum model with the fuel-saving powertrain of the Escalade Hybrid. It delivers 20 mpg in city driving – a 50-percent city mileage improvement over non-hybrid models.
“This is the ultimate Escalade, combining the luxury features of the Platinum with the world’s first hybrid on a large luxury SUV,” said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. “Along with the upcoming CTS Sport Wagon and SRX crossover, the Escalade Platinum Hybrid represents an opportunity for the changing priorities of luxury consumers who want dramatic design and technology combined with fuel efficiency and functionality.”
The Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system allows it to return exceptional fuel economy, while delivering the capabilities of a true luxury SUV. The limited-edition Escalade Platinum model includes other advanced technologies, such as light-emitting diode (LED) headlamps and Cadillac’s advanced Magnetic Ride Control system.
Escalade Platinum Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. It delivers up to 5,800 pounds (2,631 kg) of usable towing capacity on 2WD models and 5,600 pounds (2,540 kg) on 4WD models.
GM’s patented two-mode hybrid technology
GM’s patented two-mode hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology.
The key to Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system is that the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.
Providing power to the hybrid’s electrically variable transmission’s (EVT) two electric motors is a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). This battery pack is located under the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second- or third-row ingress/egress.
Additional features of the hybrid powertrain and supporting systems include:
Fully blended regenerative braking to capture energy that would otherwise be lost during vehicle deceleration.

Lexus LX - What the Auto Press Says

The newly redesigned 2008 Lexus LX is a capable, luxurious and expensive SUV.
The 2008 Lexus LX has full-size SUV capability and utility. Those capabilities are married to a spacious and luxurious cabin that's stuffed full of technology to keep occupants happy and comfortable. Reviewers are especially pleased with the LX's engine, which they say moves the large SUV along easily and allows for one of the best towing capacities in the class. Beyond that, gadgets like adjustable ride height (which raises or lowers the LX for off-roading, or to make getting in and out easier) and quad-zone climate control are reviewer favorites.
Still, a number of reviewers wonder if there's a point to combining some of the best luxury and off-roading ability available today. Automobile Magzine says the LX "is still a big, heavy, off-road ready truck wearing a badge isn't equated with dirt unless the boys down at the car wash missed a spot. What's the point?" Many other reviewers echo that view and see the LX as a good choice for a very small slice of the population: wealthy people who routinely two heavy loads and venture well off-road. Other buyers, say many reviewers, should look elsewhere. As gas prices stay high and large SUV sales stagnate, it's clear that many buyers have.
To check out the Best Lexious deal researched by US News .
"The redesigned "Lexus Land Cruiser" still doesn't have quite the cachet of the Audi Q7, which will soon offer thrifty diesel power. Nor does it offer the in-your-face style of the Cadillac Escalade, which is adding a fuel-saving gas/electric hybrid version. In spite of this, LX 570 offers plenty of room, refinement, and luxury; laudable safety and performance features; and is highly capable off-road." --

Cadillac Escalade - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Cadillac Escalade ranks 1 out of 11 Luxury large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 75 published reviews and test drives of the Cadillac Escalade, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Cadillac Escalade roars into 2010 with look-at-me styling, an impressive cabin, and good performance for its size.
The Cadillac Escalade roars into 2010 with look-at-me styling, an impressive cabin, and good performance for its size.
The 2010 Escalade makes sense for buyers who need to haul a lot of people or tow boats and horse trailers, and want to do both in style.Edmunds says the Escalade is "one of the best full-size luxury SUVs on the market."
The Escalade can seat up to eight people and comes in four models: the Escalade, Escalade ESV (an extended version), the Excalade Ext(which trades the third row seat and enclosed cargo area for a short truck bed) and the EScalade Hybird.
The Escalade's size and power give it a thirst for fuel, though for 2010, that thirst has been tempered a little. The Escalade's 6.2 liter V8 engine now comes with cylinder deactivation, a system that shuts down four of the engines cylinders when they're not needed, saving fuel. If you want to save even more gas, check out the Escalade Hybrid.
In addition to cylinder deactivation, the Cadillac Escalade also adds a USB port for portable music devices and side-thorax airbags for the front seats for 2010.
General Motors, Cadillac's parent company, recently declared bankruptcy. While that leads to some uncertainty for Cadillac buyers (though warranties should e honored), it also means some steep discounts for people who can handle the unknown and negotiate hard. Use our Free dealer quote tool to start the negotiation process on a new Escalade by getting competing quotes from dealers in your area.
When checking out the Escalade, also consider the Toyota land crusier, which offers more off-road capability and the Lincon navigator, which has a more useable third row.

2009 Maserati GranTurismo S

It’s called the “S”, but you won’t find an S badge anywhere on its bodywork. So if you’re looking to identify the latest and greatest version of Maserati’s stunning GranTurismo coupe, just gaze at the wheels. They’re new 20s, featuring the Maserati trident emblem for spokes, with a more open look for better viewing of the red Brembo calipers and pizza-sized rotors. Hoist the hood and you’ll see the real reason for all the fuss: a new, uprated 4.7-liter wet-sump V-8 with very sexy, red-painted cam covers. Power increases by 28 ponies to 433, with a hike in torque from 339 to 361 lb-ft. Add in new software for the six-speed manual/auto gearbox and you’ll see 100-millisecond shifts when in Manual Sport mode. And the real party piece? That would be the Sport button on the dash that opens a bypass valve in the exhaust to give you the full-on, ripping-canvas sound track. The S arrives November ’08 with a $135,000 price tag.

2007 Maserati GRANSPORT COUPE

In last year’s magazine, we said the countdown clock was already ticking for the arrival of an allnew, Quattroporte-based Maser GT. Guess what; the Timex is still a-ticking as there’s still no sign of the car. Maybe 2008, we’ve heard. Or maybe not. So the current GranSport stays on lifesupport for at least another year. Bring out the defibrillator, Ethel. But if you’re looking for something different from the usual Merc SL, Porsche 911, Jaguar XK, the latest GranSport coupe oozes Italian passione. It’s powered by a 4.2-liter 32-valve V-8, massaged by parent company Ferrari and coupled to a six-speed Cambiocorsa clutchless transmission. Tighter suspension and a half-inch lower ride height sharpen the handling a notch, compared to the regular GT Coupe. And it looks very gran sporty with its deep front and rear spoilers, rear diffuser, modified rockers, and very funky leather and carbon- fiber interior. But still, bring on the new GT.

2010 Maserati GranTurismo MC

The new Maserati GranTurismo MC is an offshoot of the Maserati GranTurismo MC Concept introduced last September in Monza and based on the Maserati GranTurismo S road version, with electro-actuated gearbox system.
A limited series of the Maserati GranTurismo MC produced for gentlemen drivers who wish to race in the 2010 GT4 European Cup and the national series, will be on sale as of October 2009. The indicative price is 135,000 Euro + VAT. The cars will be sold directly through Maserati Corse.
In 2010 Maserati intends to once again organize a European single-make cup race. The cars participating in this Cup shall naturally present specifications that will set them apart from the GT4-version Maserati GranTurismo MCs.
Maserati chose to create a model with GT4 features because GT4 is the category with the closest links to production models. There is a niche of GranTurismo road car owners who love racing and want to be able to test their mettle on a track driving a racing version of the same model they own.
The Maserati GranTurismo MC is the result of a development work carried out during many test sessions that started in the Summer of 2008.
Various drivers have taken turns developing the Maserati GranTurismo MC Concept from which the Maserati GranTurismo MC stemmed. With their strong professional and racing background, each and every one of them contributed to the creation of the final version.
With the creation of the Maserati GranTurismo MC, the tradition of the Trident logo car manufacturer who remains loyal to its origins lives on. In 2004 Maserati Corse started racing again internationally in the FIA GT Championship featuring the MC12; it achieved three victories at the prestigious Spa 24 Hours (2005, 2006, and 2008 Vitaphone Racing Team) and no less than ten absolute titles:
- Three FIA GT Drivers Championships in 2006 (Michael Bartels/Andrea Bertolini), in 2007 (Thomas Biagi) and in 2008 (Michael Bartels/Andrea Bertolini)
- Four FIA GT Teams Championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 (Vitaphone Racing Team)
- Two FIA GT Manufacturers Cups in 2005 and 2007
- One Citation Cup for gentlemen drivers in 2007 (Ben Aucott).
Race have always been the most demanding test-bench for all cars. Traditionally, reliability and performance are checked on track. It is in races that new technologies and materials are tested. And it is on the circuit that Maserati has decided to raise the much praised-sporty verve of its Maserati GranTurismo S to even higher levels to create the Maserati GranTurismo MC.

2009 Maserati GranTurismo by Novitec Tridente

A modified Maserati is a rare car, indeed. Novitec is one of the few tuners that have stepped up to bat to modify the Maserati line, with its Novitec Tridente group working hard to obtain the best performance out of the luxury and sporty sedans and coupes. Its latest creation is a package for the Maserati GranTurismo that brings power up to a stunning 600 hp via a supercharger, reworked ECU, and free-flowing exhaust. The package also includes a front spoiler, rear wing, and side skirts that not only add flash, but enhances aerodynamics. To keep the power on the pavement, it added a KW/Novitec suspension and increased the tire width with NM3 five-spoke wheels measuring 20x9 up front and 21x12.5 at the rear. We will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

2008 Maserati QUATTROPORTE

Maserati’s melt-your-heart Quattroporte used to be the Naomi Campbell of the super-sedan world—gorgeous to look at, but with a nasty habit of whacking you at the back of the head. The Maserati’s whack was its DuoSelect auto transmission, which shifted gears with the brutality and urgency of a racecar. Not good when your supermodel passenger is trying to sip her mocha latte with extra froth. Thankfully that’s all changed with the introduction of a conventional, oily smooth, six-speed ZF automatic transmission. Now this achingly beautiful luxe sports sedan can get back to what it does best—transporting four lucky occupants at 167 mph in total, hedonistic comfort. Power comes from that Ferrari-sourced 4.2-liter quad-cam V-8, delivering 400 stallions, that’s good for zero-to-60-mph sprints in 5.4 seconds. Take your pick from the standard $116,560 model, or move up to the $121,100 Sport GT, or the decadent $122,400 Executive GT. As for those curves? Priceless.

2009 Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic

**Some may wonder why Maserati is replacing its auto-clutch manual transmission with a six-speed automatic transmission. Only after customer complaints on the jerkiness of the Quattroporte did Maserati decided to replace its manu-matic with an automatic in 2007. It was just a matter of time before it did the same to the GranTurimso. ** The new Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic features a 4.7 V8 engine which develops 433 hp at 7000 rpm. The maximum torque is 361 lbs.-ft. at 4.750 rpm. Thanks to the combination of the 440 HP produced by the powerful 4.7-liter V-8 engine and the smoothness of the ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox, the Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic stresses the original Granturismo concept while at the same time offering peak performance. The Skyhook suspension system featuring continuously adjustable dampers provides great driving comfort. Passive safety is further enhanced thanks to the introduction on the GranTurismo range of a new generation of passenger air-bag with Low Risk Deployment functionality. Consistently with the unmistakable design of all Maseratis, the Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic features some discreet yet marked stylistic changes which make it immediately recognizable: the new under-door mini-skirts featuring a prominent shape, which enhances the dynamism of its profile and the new 20" wheel rims with the brand new "Trident" design featuring spokes that distinctly reflect the Trident shape to create a mix of strength and elegance. A further enriched equipment increases the on board pleasure for the driver and the passengers, thanks to the Bluetooth® Technology, offered as standard, and the Ipod® interface, available upon request, which complete the Maserati Multi Media System.

2009 Maserati QUATTROPORTE S

It’s taken awhile, but Maserati’s big, four-door Quattroporte has finally blossomed into the magnifico ultra-luxury sedan it always deserved to be. So much so that the latest Quattroporte S, due on the streets early November 2008, comes close to such sedan superstars as Bentley’s Flying Spur and Merc’s S600 in terms of hedonistic luxury coupled with driver gratification. Distinguished by its vertical chrome grille louvers, which connect it visually to the new GranTurismo, the new S comes with an uprated version of the Ferrari-derived V-8. Capacity goes up from 4.2 to 4.7 liters, with a power hike from 400 hp to 425. Floor the throttle, listen to the baritone crescendo as the revs soar, and sit back in wonderment as this 4,400-pound piece of rolling sculpture rushes to 60 mph in a smidge longer than five seconds. Bigger front rotors and larger 19-inch Pirellis add to the driving delights, as does the all-new Bose multimedia/nav system.

2009 Maserati QUATTROPORTE Sport GT S

The new Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S sets yet another milestone in terms of sportiness in the high performance luxury sedan segment of the automotive market . Conceived and developed as "a real driving machine in the guise of a luxury sedan ", the Quattroporte Sport GT S is the ultimate expression of Maserati's sportiness in the Quattroporte range. The technical changes to the new Quattroporte Sport GT S in respect to the Quattroporte S concern four areas: - the mapping of the V8 4.7 litre engine, with power increased to 323kW; - the gearshift management software, with new features designed to increase driving enjoyment; - the front and rear suspension system featuring single-rate dampers, stiffer springs and lower ride height; - the sports exhaust controlled by pneumatic valves for a deep, throaty and captivating sound. The sportier and more aggressive look is evident also in virtue of the interior's and exterior's stylistic choices: - the new black grille with concave vertical fins featuring the Trident logo with red accents, typical of the sportier versions of Maserati models; - the new headlights, in metallic titanium finish; - the side and rear "shadow line", which includes black finishing around the doors, body-colored door handles and black twin oval exhaust pipes, - the new M-design seats with perforated Alcantara® and leather upholstery; - the standard trim in Titantex, a "titanium colored" composite material.

2009 Maserati GranTurismo S MC Sport Line

The MC Sport Line customization program focuses on the racing vocation of the Maserati, fresh from its latest international triumph in the FIA GT championship with the duo Bertolini-Bartels in the land of Juan Manuel Fangio. Modena - December 3, 2008. Maserati has developed a special series of new options named "MC Sport Line", which makes its worldwide debut at the Bologna Motor Show, with new contents that add to Maserati's already extensive range of personalized features on offer. The MC Sport Line is designed to enhance the sporty DNA of Maserati vehicles for those customers who like to display their passion for racing through a dynamic look and a choice of technical solutions that increase the driving fun without compromises. The name "MC Sport Line" sums up the experience acquired on the track by the Maserati Corse department, whose contribution to the design of the functional components has been invaluable. The world of motor racing also inspired Maserati's designers when it came to styling, hence the extensive use of carbon fiber, very popular among racing enthusiasts thanks to its direct connection with racing competitions. The GranTurismo S, the ultimate expression of Maserati performance on roads, was the model chosen to present to the public the first proposals of the "MC Sport Line" catalogue, which will be extended in the GranTurismo range and then cover the entire Maserati line-up during the course of 2009. From early 2009, GranTurismo S customers will not only be able to enhance the sporty look of their vehicle's exterior and interior - but even offer mechanical solutions. Aerodynamics can be modified thanks to the addition of front and rear carbon-fiber spoilers, which benefit from track tests conducted on the GranTurismo MC Concept; the new aerodynamics not only optimizes the vertical load but gives the car a very distinctive appearance, as do the side skirts with central panel finished in matt black, adding a dynamic edge to the side view. The sporty look of the exterior can be completed with the mirror housing and door handles, also made from carbon fiber. The same dark shade is reflected in the glossy black 20" wheel rims that match the dark line of the exterior perfectly. The carbon fiber door sill bearing the words "MC Sport Line" tells you that you are entering a different environment, in which carbon fiber characterizes the door panels, dashboard and central tunnel. The steering wheel rim is also made from carbon fiber, as are the control stalks for the electro-actuated transmission and the body of the instrument panel, dashboard and door panels, featuring carbon molding. Looking at the central tunnel, carbon fiber dominates the entire section, acting as a backdrop to enhance the brilliance of the chrome. The "MC" pedal block complete with kickplate to the left is machined from a solid aluminium piece. Under the "skin", the suspension has been stiffened thanks to new, stiffer springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars; the new suspension set-up is synchronized with a specific Maserati Stability Program software, allowing the driver more freedom. The car is now 10 mm lower than the GranTurismo S, resulting in a performance on the road of the GranTurismo S that is absolutely uncompromising in terms of handling and driving enjoyment. All the features listed are available either as part of the customization package, following the indications of Maserati designers; or individually, to cater for the personal tastes of each customer.

2009 Audi A4 3.2 FSI quattro

The A4 with Quattro is a bit of a surprise in the Audi line up. First off, it comes in four variations. The introductory model is your choice of either a sedan or station wagon. Audi refers to the wagon version as an “Avant”. Power comes from a 2.0 litre direct injected and turbocharged gasoline engine. At the upper end, the sedan and Avant models come with a 3.2 litre direct injected V-6.
My first exposure to the A4 3.2 FSI was actually about a year ago in England. I managed to sweet talk Audi UK out of a car for a couple of weeks. I had asked for an automatic and wound up with a six-speed manual. Now I’m on the wrong side of the road, on the wrong side of the car, shifting with the wrong arm. To keep this short, I only tried to shift with the door handle a couple of times. I loved the A4 once I got used to it and looked forward to driving a Canadian model. The Canadian model that turned up was an automatic and not quite as well decked out as the British car. The British car had all the option boxes checked off while my tester here, was just a sedan with an automatic transmission. Mind you even the basic A4 with the 3.2 direct injected (FSI) V6 comes with an impressive array of standard equipment, including climate control and heated seats. There are still options such as Sat/Nav, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and upgraded stereo packages which include audio jacks and a USB port. Audi also includes a blue tooth prep package and satelliter radio on the option list. One important point to me was that the A4 was be able to seat four in comfort and to make sure, I rode in the back for a few hours. I have to admit that a larger car would have been more spacious, but I doubt if it would have been more comfortable. The seat itself had plenty of hip room and I had a decent amount of space for my shoulders. Head room was a bit tight. I found it to be OK, but my tallest son urged me not to hit any large bumps that could possibly bounce him around. Up front, the bucket seats were very comfortable and could form around a large range of body sizes. On the driver’s side, the power seat let me get comfortable in about 10 seconds and I finished up with a few small adjustments to the manually adjustable steering column. A few more seconds to get the mirrors in place and I was ready for a drive.

2009 Acura RDX Technology Review

For any brand that sells prestige, looks are fundamental. After years of identity crisis and soul searching, Acura finally seems to have found its defining character. The company’s slogan is "Advance", but I would rather call it "The Future is Now".The 2009 RDX compact SUV did not escape from the energetic claws of Acura designers. The front fascia is ultra-modern and what looks like a lack of structural coherence is actually a highly-complex design with zero orphan lines in the bodywork. While the front overhang is a bit too long, especially for off-road trips, the side profile still manages to look athletic and balanced. The RDX appears to be crouching and ready to pounce, as emphasized by the 18-inch wheels and low ground clearance. Aesthetically speaking, the rear end is not quite as well integrated to the rest of the vehicle; in fact, it looks unfinished compared to the nose and midsection. Beautiful functionalityThe great thing about Honda/Acura products is that interior quality is generally beyond reproach. The RDX is certainly no exception. Fit and finish are superb; the same goes for material selection and overall styling. However, like every other model from this Japanese automaker, the cockpit is littered with buttons and controls. Paradoxically, the dashboard remains simple and easy to use. The friendliness of Acura’s navigation system alone is worth an honorary mention. Ergonomics are considerably improved by the control knob and the bilingual voice recognition software proves very competent. Audio controls are a bit too low for easy manipulation; however, redundant buttons on the steering wheel fix the problem. Right behind is an absolutely-magnificent set of instruments. The configuration and backlighting are nearly perfect. Since the Acura RDX sits relatively close to the ground, access to the cabin is easy. Expect to find a good driving position and, given that it’s a Japanese product, the seats offer adequate side support.

2008 Honda Accord: Facing tougher competition

With Toyota's new Carmy picking up sales from disenchanted sport/utility buyers, and increased competition from an updated Nisan Altima, all-new Satern auta, and Kia Optima, the next Accord is an especially critical car for Honda.
Styling of the 2008 model due late next year will have some of the new Civic design philosophy, with a wide stance, large wheels, and clean, flowing styling. The car is said to be larger overall than the current model and, unlike Camry, the range will include a new coupe.
A new Accord hybrid is another question, as the current version isn't selling as well as full-hybrid-powered cars like the Camry (and it'll have competition from Altima and Aura hybrids in 2007). But Honda recently announced it would bring a new fuel-efficient "clean diesel" to the United States by 2009.
Based on the current Euro-market 2.2-liter turbodiesel four, it'll eschew the emerging urea-injection technology in favor of a twin-layer catalyst that converts nitrogen oxide diesel emissions into ammonia and then into simple nitrogen gas. Honda says it complies with emissions standards in all 50 states.

Hyundai Avante

Hyundai Elantra is now set to come in its new form Avante. Expected to hit Indian roads in mid-2008, the car was displayed at the 9th AutoExpo in New Delhi early this year. The car has all nice details andhas a very contemporary looks both in exteriors as well as interiors. It has got roomy cabin, sleek dashboard architecture and all the controls and instruments feature soothing blue backlighting. It also has got twin front airbags and digital climate control. It is a refined machine and has very little wind and road noise intrusion with great body control.
Avante looks good head on but the grille design disappoints and so does the bumper which could have been more chiseled. The car looks its best from the rear with the corolla type tail lamps and a chunky bumper. The side has a wave crease running along which is in sync with the way the C pillar flows into the boot section.
Avante would be launched with a 2 litre DOHC petrol engine and a 1.6 litre CRDi diesel engine and priced between Rs. 9-11 lakh. This pricing would pit Avante against successful sedans like Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Optra.

2011 Honda CR-Z: 21st-Century CRX

Hondas CR-Z hybrid coupe remains on track as a 2011 model, on sale in late 2010. Honda wants sports-car enthusiasts to buy it not because it's green, but because it's fun. The carmaker considered doing a non-hybrid version of the CR-Z, but it desperately wants to be seen as a hybrid supplier on par with Toyota and believes it needs a range of dedicated hybrid-only models to achieve that.So the CR-Z gets a lively 140-horse, 1.8-liter Civic-derived engine. The IMA system -- motor, battery, electronics -- will be like the Inslight's, as will the platform, to save cost. A senior engineer says, "It must be fun to drive, must remind you of the original CRX." And a manual gearbox will be offered. "CVT is fine for the market, mostly. But we are Honda! We must have a manual!"
As a two-seater, the CR-Z's smaller body mass versus the Insight should make up for the weight of the bigger engine, brakes, and tires. So a 2800-pound total, with lots of electric-assist torque and a revvy gasoline engine, should make it the real deal as a pocket performance coupe.
Honda has trimmed back its sports cars. President Takeo Fukui said the company has canceled the Acura NSX replacement, though engineers say it may simply be deferred. And the rear-drive Acura range has been canceled. Honda is out of Formula 1. So the CR-Z must be to Honda in the 2010s what the CRX was to Honda in the 1980s.
The other leg of Honda's small-car hybrid tripod, the Fit hybrid, also is going ahead for a '10 release. To give the Insight a lower overall height than the Fit, for reduced aero drag at highway speeds, the fuel tank was moved from under the front seats in the Fit to under the rear seats in the Insight. Speeds in the EPA test aren't high enough to make aerodynamics a factor, so the Fit hybrid may match the Insight's fuel economy label, and offer more space and versatility, for less money. It will interesting to see how the marketing guys handle that one.

Nissan Pathfinder Review

Nissan Pathfinder is a powerful, quick performer. It feels surprisingly light and agile and offers wonderfully quick throttle response. The current design has been with us for awhile now, but the Pathfinder still looks contemporary.
Nissan now has three sport-utilities, and that'll soon grow to four. If Nissan's entry-level Xterra is considered tough gear, then the Pathfinder is premium equipment. Pathfinder offers luxury features and refinement not found in Xterra, yet still provides genuine off-road capability. The Pathfinder competes with the Toyota 4Runner.
Leather upholstery is standard on the Pathfinder LE, the top model for 2003. Side-impact airbags and curtain air bags are standard on the LE. Pathfinder SE models get re-styled six-spoke 16-inch wheels and titanium-colored interior accents. All Pathfinders feature a new four-spoke steering wheel and an electronic rear hatch window release.
A new Dynamic Control Package includes electronic stability control, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Also, a choice of XM or Sirius satellite radio is now available on all Pathfinders.

2010 Acura ZDX: New Luxury Crossover Debuts in New York

The luxury division of Honda is using the 2009 New York Auto Show to show off a new midsize crossover may reach dealership lots as soon as 2010.
The 2010 Acura ZDX is officially being described as a concept car, but kicking tires reports that it goes on sale this Fall. "Honda and Acura don't often roll out concept cars," they explain. "Instead, they reveal prototypes that closely resemble upcoming production vehicles. That's definitely the case with the Acura ZDX crossover concept. The company announced today it will indeed go on sale this fall."
No one seems quite sure what to call the new model. "Acura calls the ZDX a 'sports coupe.'" Motor trend explains. "Seeing as it's built on the same platform as the MDX USVand shares its powertrain, all-wheel-drive layout, and high seating position, the purists might argue. But in the context of BMW newsM, and Infinties fx50, Acura might have a point. These days, almost anything with a cabin where space has been deliberately compromised for the sake of style is called a sports coupe."
Sitting high on 20-inch tires, the ZDX could be described as a crossover utility vehicle. Auto blogsays the car is "clearly aimed at the similarly proportioned BMW X6." It features styling similar to the Tl sedan, but with prominent rear fender bulges and, sitting on big 20-inch wheels, a ride height closer to that of many SUVS. "To further emphasize the crossover's coupiness, Acura designers have hid the rear door handles in the base of the C-pillar." Autoblog calls it "the best expression yet of Acura's new design language, which has taken some getting used to on its current lineup of sedans."
Motor Trend says the ZDX will "arguably be the best looking vehicle in the Acura range when it goes on sale this fall."Edmonds insidw lines reports that the ZDX "will feature a V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission," but Acura representatives have not given details on the engine's size or power. The production version is expected to "get Acura's SH-AWD (Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive) system," which has won praise in the TL and RL sedans. The system varies the speed of each wheel independently to help point the vehicle into turns. In Acura sedans, it's resulted in sharp cornering prowess with little body lean.
Kicking Tires adds, "The company also promises an upscale cabin beyond what's in current Acuras. High-tech features will include a blind spot detection system and multiview rear camera. It will also have a panoramic glass sunroof, as all luxury crossovers must have these days."
According to Edmunds Inside Line, prices will range from about $42,000 to $50,000.

2009 Audi R Zero Concept

If anyone thinks that an electric car is deprived of elegance and dynamism, Audi R-Zéro is a battery-driven vehicle that can fulfill dreams and arouse desires. As oil prices continue to increase and the Protocol of Kyoto enters application, the bio-energies face serious limitations. Our energy future does not depend only on crude oil reserves. In the face of climatic change and its ecological and human cost, the consumption of hydrocarbons cannot continue at the current pace. It is necessary to decrease and diversify our consumption. Transport is the principal source of air pollution and oil consumption to a total value of 50%.

THe initial purpose for the elaboration of this concept was to create a machine with demonic sensations by avoiding the immoderation and the inconveniences that we know of the current supercars, mainly in term of pollution. A concept with the image of a muscular sports car, the Audi TT, and with performance equivalent to that of the Bugatti Veyron, the whole works in harmony with our environment and must join the perspective of 2010.
Aside from the production of the batteries themselves, this car is respectful of the environment mainly due to its electric motorization. The system of electric motorization transmits the fabulous power and reactivity of the engine. It is in harmony with the ecological challenge and meets the needs of the present without compromising the capacity to satisfy the needs of the future generations.
The R-Zero is an exceptional supercar benefiting from an outstanding architecture. The electric motorization allows an original hierarchical organization of the streams of air in order to to control the behavior of the airflow around and inside the car. The structure of the aerodynamic flow optimizes cooling of the motor and the brakes, as well as generating steady aerodynamic support, all of which is synonymous for performance.
The "Back single frame" is not a free aesthetic subtlety nor deprived of functionality … An airstream connecting the 2 single frames (back and front) is present inside in the car : This structural column thus traverses the total length of the machine. Technique drove the design and the technical constraints were not subject to stylistic demands that, aside from the "Back single frame", we have created a product which forms part of the lineage of explosive motor vehicles. And in the end, we have an electric motor car which does not look like an electric car.
This concept represents a future prospect coming from students of the International School of Design, ISD France.

Venturi Fetish

The folks at Monaco-based Venturi Automobiles have used two strategies to overcome the problems of producing a high-performance, all-electric luxury sportscar: manufacture only 25 units per year, and charge $400,000 for each one. The Venturi Fetish, described by the company as “the first production electric sports car in automobile history,” can bolt from zero to 60 in 4.3 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 105 mph. The physics behind this level of performance: 330 horsepower pushing a carbon-fiber vehicle weighing only 2,425 pounds.

When the vehicle’s 100 li-on battery packs are topped off, Venturi claims the Fetish can go 220 miles before needing a recharge. A rapid battery charge is available, yielding about one mile of driving for every minute of juice. Venturi has taken the guesswork out of knowing how much charge is left by teaming up with Intel to create a wireless information system to remotely monitor the energy storage status, as well as other critical data. Before writing a check for a deposit, you might consider that the vehicle has yet to meet U.S. guidelines to become certified for American roads. Customers take delivery in Monaco and are responsible for transport to the United States…or anywhere else, for that matter. Orders are being taken, with a production and delivery timeline of approximately one year.

Cadillac Converj

After the $4 gas price spike in mid-2008, global car companies quickly adopted the near unanimous goal of producing greener more fuel-efficient cars for the masses. But opinions about how exactly to drive down the inherent cost of hybrids, electric cars, and clean diesel vehicles—to make these technologies affordable and commonplace—have broken down into two camps.

Cadillac Converj

The Cadillac Converj, a sleek angular luxury concept plug-in hybrid, was introduced at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Hybrid stalwarts Honda and Toyota are making a move to capitalize on their early investment in gas-electric technology by increasing production numbers, lowering costs, and offering hybird for around$20,000 Electric car and plug-in hybrid startups, tesla and Fisker, are hoping to enter the market with exotic green machines in the neighborhood of six figures—and then to demonstrate profitability, and slowly work toward follow-up models at $50,000 or below. General Motors is somewhere stuck in the middle when it comes to its plug-in hybrids, like the Chervrolet Volt.

The Volt likely will carry a sticker price around $40,000—steep for a Chevrolet product—and still not turn a profit for years. Bob Lutz, GM’s product czar, said, "In terms of recovering the cost from the technology, doing it in a Cadillac would have made it financially easier to do.” We don’t have to wonder what a luxury version of the Volt would look like. The company unveiled the Cadillac Converj concept vehicle at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Why a “Cadi-Volt”?

Built on the mechanicals of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, the Cadillac Converj won rave reviews at the show, with its aggressive coupe profile, angular lines, and sleek, elegant exterior. AnEscalade Hibrid, it definitely ain’t.

Cadillac Converj SchematicCadillac Converj Interior

Those underlying mechanicals, now known as Voltec (nee E-Flex), are largely unchanged for the Converj. They include a 16-kilowatt-hour battery pack powering the 120-kilowatt electric motor that drives the front wheels, for an all-electric range of 40 miles, with a range-extending 1.4-liter engine to power a generator that recharges the pack for another 300-plus miles of travel. While the control electronics might be retuned for slightly better performance, the Converj wasn’t about technical specs. A company press release states: “The four-passenger Converj concept is intended to show how GM’s revolutionary electric propulsion technology…can power a luxury coupe with a typically Cadillac ‘no compromises’ design.”

Cadillac Cues

The “aggressive, forward-leaning” profile is supported on large wheels and tires: 21-inch diameter in the front, 22 inches at the rear. A glass roof incorporates solar panels that can power vehicle accessories, and like the Volt, the Converj minimizes aerodynamic drag. It has a full belly pan to smooth airflow below the car, the grille openings are minimal, and its outside mirrors were even replaced with video cameras to eliminate the drag they added.

Now-traditional Cadillac style cues include the light-pipe technology in the vertical headlamps and tail lamps, fitted with light-emitting diods(led) and high-intensity discharge elements.

The Converj also uses the Magnetic Ride Control suspension pioneered on Cadillac’s pricey XLR two-seater. In this system, damping is provided by electrorheological fluid whose viscosity changes millisecond by millisecond as a magnetic field affects the magnetic particles suspended in it.

The Cadillac theme of “art and science” is most visible inside the concept, which blends high-tech electronics with luxurious materials.

Black leather and white synthetic suede upholstery is matched to aluminum and wood-grain accents, and the designers attempted to use sustainable materials. The suede comes from “post-industrial content” (when was the last time you heard that about a Cadillac interior?), the carpeting blends in real wool, and the headliner is made of silk.

The instrument cluster uses an organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) display, just like the crispest and priciest monitors. All the controls are operated through a touchscreen (think iPhone), and the exterior cameras that supplant rear-view mirrors display their images on a screen high in the instrument panel.

Aerodynamics and Cash Flow

Cadillac Converj

Bob Lutz arrives on stage in the Cadillac Converj at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

But let’s hope that its stylists did their homework on the aerodynamics. If the Converj goes into production, we hope it won’t vary as much as the 2011 Volt does from thevery different shspe of the concept shown in 2007, which was striking but proved wildly un-aerodynamic. The design of the Volt's more aerodynamic production version is much more sedate. The Dallas Morning News said it “looks like the quintessential rental car.”

Perhaps Lutz and the gang are still smarting from criticism about those design changes. At the Detroit Auto Show, he emphatically stated that if the Converj goes into production, it will look “exactly like” the concept version. That’s a big if. Before the Converj goes into production, according to Lutz, GM has to prove four things: that the company has the money to make the vehicle, that it’s a higher priority than other vehicles in the works, that the Converj can make money, and that there’s customer interest. "It's going to be financially tough sliding," said Lutz.
